3. Deciding topics
4. Reading

1. Sending and receiving email messages

課題や問い合わせのメールが無事コーチのところに届いたかどうか確認したいとき

Email is not perfect. People are not perfect. Mistakes happen. People forget. Mail gets trashed, lost in mailboxes, lost on the Internet, treated as spam, and more.

When we do not get email, it is always best to confirm.

Here are some samples:

Sample A

Dear (Coach’s name),

How are you? I hope all is well with you.

I am fine and enjoying (something).

I wanted to check to make sure that you received my email (three) days ago. I sent an email message and attached assignment (number 3).

Please let me know.

Thanks,

(Your name)

Sample B

Dear (Coach’s name),

How are you? I hope you are enjoying the beautiful (spring, summer, fall, winter) weather.

The weather here is very (something). I (something).

I wanted to check to make sure that you received my email (three) days ago. I asked you (for a topic suggestion).

Please let me know.

Thanks,

(Your name)

Sample C

Dear (Coach’s name),

How is everything in (California)?

All is well here in (Osaka).

I am emailing now to check where we are. Are you waiting for something from me? I thought I was waiting for something from you.

I am not sure though.

So, I am emailing to check where we are.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

(Your name)

Please try to confirm with your coach if there are email problems or you are not sure where you are. If that does not work, please let us know and we will be happy to check for you.

2. Communicating with your coach

コーチとコミュニケーションを図るためのコツ

Email communication repair is like conversation repair. If the communication is not working, we must do something to fix it. When you are talking face to face and do not understand, you may use expressions like the following:

Excuse me?
Could you repeat that?
I don’t understand. Could you explain that?

Email communication is the same. If you don’t understand, please let your coach know. Doing or saying nothing will not solve the problem.

3. Deciding topics

ライティングトピックを決めるとき

Coaches usually think that students have topics that they want to write about. This may or may not be correct. If you do not have a topic, or if you want suggestions, please ask your coach. When you ask your coach, it is probably helpful to give your coach some information about your interests. We have provided a sample below:

Dear (Coach),

How are you? I am doing fine here, but I don’t know what to write about for my next assignment.

I am interested in news and sports, but I just can’t seem to find a good topic.

I would appreciate your sending me two or three suggestions.

Thanks for your help.

Best,
(Your name)

4. Reading

リーディングについて

Reading is not popular with many people, but reading is the basis for good writing. Read and read often. Please remember that reading done to improve your writing should be easy reading, reading that you can do without using a dictionary very much. This reading helps you to unconsciously remember grammar and patterns. More difficult reading may help you to learn vocabulary and other things, but easy reading is what we recommend to improve your writing.

We hope this page has been helpful. As always, if there is anything we can help you with, please ask.
