Descartes on seeking the truth

Today, we would like to present a quote from Rene Descartes on seeking the truth:

If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

Rene Descartes was born on March 31, 1596 and died on February 11, 1650. Although he was a French philosopher, Descartes spent most of his adult life in Holland. He is known as the father of modern philosophy and the father of analytical geometry. Descartes' place in history also includes his being instrumental in the Scientific Revolution, which was the events that created the foundation for modern science.

Getting more oil out?

What is happening with the oil well? Now that BP has capped it, they want to leave it alone. The government is worried that pressure will build up and the oil will come out somewhere else. The government wants to relax that pressure. Letting the oil out is the only way. BP is opposed. They don't want another PR nightmare. But that is just what they will have if the oil comes out somewhere else.

We are not sure what is best. We are not sure we have confidence in the government to handle this properly. We know we don't have confidence in BP though. We will go with the government over them any day.

This story is still far from over...

LDP wins 51 seats

The big winner in the Sunday election was the Liberal Democratic Party. In spite of the name, the party is neither liberal nor democratic. The LDP now has a total of 84 seats. Only a year ago, the Democrats had a majority. Now they do not. Japan faces political gridlock and perhaps a growing LDP presence. The Democrats still control the lower house, but will be limited in their ability to effect change.

Many voters see raising the sales tax to solve Japan's debt problems as inevitable, but Kan moved too quickly for them. Voters said no; many want to delay it for as long as possible. The Democrats' recent failure to move a U.S. Marine base from Okinawa also came back to haunt them. What does the future hold for Kan, his party, and Japan?

Only time will tell, but people are not optimistic. Neither the Democrats nor the Japanese see a wonderful future ahead. The LDP does not either, but they hope to regain power...

The Prisoner

The Prisoner has yet to be seen on the big screen as a movie, but a movie appears to be in the works. Universal Pictures has worked on a movie for many years. I am not sure where it is now.

If you have seen both the new and old versions of the television show, you are probably struck by the difference in location. In the original, the Village was on an island somewhere off of Africa. In the remake, the Village is in someone's mind.

As with many remakes, the elapsing years have produced new technology and new ideas. Who could have conceived of the Village being in the mind in the 1960s?

Many remakes are just tired and should never have been made. While many people may dislike the remake of The Prisoner, it does add something new.

On Time: Segal's Law

Today, we would like to present Segal's Law:

A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure.

Segal's law predated truly accurate watches. What would Segal make of that?
