In a descriptive essay for Beginning Writing (BW), this student explains why he like a Japanese-style room. He has both positive and negative feelings about a tatami room. He begins with the positive and then moves to the negative. Notice how he switches from the positive to the negative. He writes "But one thing bothers me in a tatami room." We do such switches when we talk. The same switching is required in writing. |

This student, who does not want us to use her name, wanted help preparing for her university entrance examination. Each of her assignments was her response to a question that could be on the entrance examination. Her coach provided feedback and suggestions. Happily, this student took the exam and was successful!

This student took IRWR (Intermediate Reading and Writing Reports), a good course to prepare for writing at the university level. Each course assignment includes reading a short article and writing a report about the article. For the report, the student summarizes the article and then discusses one aspect of the article. The course goal is to develop critical thinking and analytical skills. |

In a thoughtful essay for an advanced course, Ms. Suzuki looks back to 2003. She reflects on her cross cultural experiences in Wisconsin. What I liked about the essay was how Ms. Suzuki was able to bring herself, others, food, Wisconsin, and student life together in just one page. I have a clear image of her life in Wisconsin. Well done! |

Strolling Education in Japan

Mr. Nagahashi took IEW (Intermediate Email Writing). Writing about a topic of concern to many people, Japanese education, he uses an out of the ordinary way, the 19 X 19 times table, to begin talking about a problem and a solution. While I say out of the ordinary, in fact, most of us have experience with the times table. Mr. Nagahashi's piece grabbed my attention. He presented a problem and created a solution to help improve Japanese education. Good writing is attention grabbing. |
