In the short story “Elvis Died at the Florida Barber College,” a 10-year-old orphan boy goes on a field trip to downtown Jacksonville with other boys and their matron to get a new pair of shoes and a haircut.
The boy is fascinated with Elvis Presley and wishes he could attract all the girls at the orphanage like this King of rock and roll. One of his friends tells him that Elvis is special because of his wavy hair and the way he moves his body.
Making up his mind to have the Elvis haircut at the barber’s, the boy is really excited, but first they go to the shoe store. The boy proudly walks around the store with his new Buster Brown shoes on until the special “X-ray machine” at the store captures his attention. The mysterious ray makes the bones in customers’ feet look green.
